In the past three years a small, and I do mean small group of people have tried to silence me! Asking for boycotts from underwriters ( underwriting has grown, so that did not work!), They filed a complaint with the F.C.C. ( We won! So that did not work), and now the following…
They are at it again. Here is a letter that John Mauer sent to NPR:
Name: John Mauer
Email: jmauer@geerms.com
We would like to bring to your attention the questionable behavior of an owner and operator of one of your member radio stations. WHDD is an NPR affiliate in Sharon, Connecticut with a small range, essentially the northwest corner of the state and adjacent portions of nearby New York and Massachusetts. It operates and markets itself as “the smallest NPR station in the nation.” It is listed in your directory of member stations.
For six years, Marshall Miles has been president and CEO of Tri-State Public Communications, the organization that operates that station. He currently is using the his own on-air commentaries and a political blog, regiononereport.com, to attack the educators in the Regional School District One in Connecticut, as well as members of the Region One Board of Education. His strident voice is one of the major factors in the five defeats of the regional school budget. His attacks are very personal and rarely related to educational issues.
Moreover, he is currently running for election to the Region One Board of Education from the Town of Salisbury, and using his NPR connections to promote that candidacy, even on his Facebook page.
We believe these activities might constitute a violation of the NPR code of ethics, specifically the code for impartiality. Because we are unsure how NPR responds in such situations, we would appreciate hearing from you on the subject.
I have spent time the past couple of days talking with the office! Letting them know all about Mr. Mauer and his cohorts! In the end, this will fail as well, as once again, everything I do is cleared by my FCC attorney, and my station contact on Rules and Regulations from NPR. Now to answer here some of the absurd and incorrect allegations of Mr. Mauer and his troop.
1) For six years, Marshall Miles has been president and CEO of Tri-State Public Communications ..
Wrong John, Tri-State Public Communications has been around since February of 2002, and I have been PRESIDENT not CEO during all 11 years!
2) He currently is using the his own on-air commentaries and a political blog, regiononereport.com, to attack the educators in the Regional School District One in Connecticut, as well as members of the Region One Board of Education.
Lets see, where should I start? Commentaries that the FCC has validated and found perfectly legal. And Region One Report is in no way affiliated with Tri-State Public Communications! As a matter of fact it was formed so I could have an outlet for people to express their opinions , as it explains in its “about” segment….from that page…These opinions and observations will be solely those of Marshall Miles, an alumnus and long-term supporter (and for many years parent!) in Region One. These opinions and observations do not, and are not intended to, represent any of the companies that Marshall is connected to or affiliated with, i.e. WHDD AM/FM, WBSL-FM, Robin Hood Radio. com, CATV 6, robinhoodradiotv, Tri-State Public Communications, Inc., or any of the underwriters, management, or employees of these companies. Attack, no, it is “expose”, and then inform the public of facts that are hidden deep under the rug or Region One.
3) WHDD is an NPR affiliate in Sharon, Connecticut with a small range, essentially the northwest corner of the state and adjacent portions of nearby New York and Massachusetts
Small range?! Again John is wrong (get used to that folks!) WHDD AM/FM, WLHV FM and WBSL FM cover over a quarter million people! We are heard from The Ashokan Reservoir and Windham Mountain thru the Hudson Valley all the way to South County, MA, and Northwest CT!
4) Moreover, he is currently running for election to the Region One Board of Education from the Town of Salisbury, and using his NPR connections to promote that candidacy, even on his Facebook page
Wow! What was John drinking when he wrote this?! Using NPR connections? Who? I have no connections at NPR campaigning for me! My agreement with the Salisbury Democratic town Committee allows me to stay on-air with certain special provisions until the election is over. My Facebook page! I guess he did not read my disclaimer on my personal Facebook page….

Lack of Comment In Region 1 Published: Friday, October 04, 2013 Litchfield County Times Editorial
Region One Board of Education Special Meeting Litigation October 2
Hello. I’m Marshall Miles. I am running for Region One Board of Education Representative from Salisbury as an independent petitioning candidate. There are many reasons why I seek to represent you on the board; most importantly, to give voice to students, teachers, and you the taxpayers. We must represent taxpayers’ concerns by bringing back transparency and open communication. This can be achieved by: Holding forums for residents in advance of regular meetings to solicit input; and creating an interactive website and Facebook page with video content of meetings, agendas, minutes and feedback links that enable residents to directly contact their representative. These steps will facilitate interaction between residents and the board.
We also need to regain trust and confidence in the board and bring back accountability to reinforce the board’s mission which is to demonstrate leadership in providing the best education for students. The status quo is no longer acceptable.
The first motion I will make as your Region One representative will be to notify the All Boards Chairmen that the Region One Board will not accept a recommendation from ABC in the future for a new contract or extension of an existing contract to either the present Superintendent or Assistant Superintendent. It is time to take a major distraction off the board’s and public’s plate and get on with running the district with educational goals in mind…not their contracts or employment status.
From my first day as Region One representative from Salisbury, I pledge to hold at least one open forum a month at a convenient Salisbury location one to two weeks prior to regular Region One Board meetings. The purpose will be to allow residents, taxpayers, students, teachers and Region One employees to have an open discussion in the hope of raising concerns or questions to add to the upcoming board meeting agenda.
Marshall is a 1971 graduate of Housatonic Valley Regional High School. Marshall, a highly regarded communications entrepreneur, entered his 43rd year in broadcasting in 2013. He is co-founder, along with Jill Goodman, of Robin Hood Radio, the smallest NPR station in the nation (located in Sharon, CT). Robin Hood Radio has grown from an internet only station to a broadcast group that now operates three broadcast facilities. Marshall has been named one of Litchfield County’s 50 most influential people by Litchfield Magazine, and honored as Citizen of the Year by both the Sharon Lions Club and Millerton Lions Club. Marshall resides on Factory Street in Salisbury with his two dogs…LJ and Georgia and cats Bauer, Jessie, Clyde and Genghis. Marshall’s other cats, AM and FM reside at the studios of Robin Hood Radio in Sharon.
